As a result of the change in name of the Imports and Exports Department to Department of Commerce and Industry, i was necessary to devise a new title for the present Department of Supplies, Trade and Industry. This now title will be Department of Supplies and Distribution.

Personal emoluments show a reduction of nearly $70,000 but this is offset to some extent by the provision of $36,000 for professional fees to a firm of Accountants which had previously been shown inappropriately under personal emoluments.

Other Charges have risen by $110,800 of which $70,200 represent the expenses of the Tokyo Office which had previously been met from the Japan Trade account.

With two exceptions, the staff of this department is the same as in 1948-49 allowing for personnel transferred to the now Registrar General's Department. The two new posts are one additional Puisne Judge, the creation of which was authorised in 1948-49, and one Magistrate and President of the Tenancy Tribunals, for which post an officer has recently been engaged on contract. The nott increase in personal emoluments is $38,976.

For Other Charges expenditure is still of the same order as 1948-49. An additional $9,000 is required for the purchase of books for the Library of the Supreme Court. A new sub-head is introduced entitled Tenancy Tribunal expenses from which, in an effort to clear arrears, the services of temporary magistrates and clerks will be paid.

The increase in expenditure amounts to $69,576.

There are no changes in the staff of this department, apart from the transfer of the Estate Duty Office to the Inland Revenue Department. The increased provision for overtime allowance and expatriation pay largely account for the increase of $63,637.
